What is an FBI Background Check?

An FBI Background Check is essentially a summary of your criminal history.

When is an FBI Background Check needed?

Employment: Some employers, especially those in sensitive industries (e.g., law enforcement, government, finance), may require an FBI background check.

Adoption: Required for people adopting children.

Professional Licensing: Certain professions, such as Lawyers or Healthcare Professional, may require an FBI background check for licensing.

Immigration: An Attorney may request a copy of your FBI background to determine immigration eligibility.

Travel Visas: Some countries may require an FBI background check to be completed before issuing visas for travel, work or studies.

Court Related:  An FBI background check may be requested by the Court system to seal, expunge, or remove inaccurate information regarding your criminal history.

Personal Review: Individuals may request a background check for personal reasons, to ensure their records are accurate.

To request an FBI background check, also referred to as a “Rap Sheet“, you typically need to provide fingerprints and submit them either directly to the FBI or through an approved FBI-approved channeler.  The results are then returned in the form of a report detailing your criminal history, if any.
